Something is rotten in the state of Denmark - a state in squalor, boredom and debauchery. When royal deceit is uncovered, madness is added to the mix and the monarchy of Denmark spiral inevitably towards their downfall.
Hartwell re-examines what is, arguably, Shakespeare's most seminal tragedy - reduced, fleshy and immediate - trying to find the heart of what makes Hamlet tragic.
